Outpost Natural Foods celebrated 50 years in business last weekend with a virtual birthday party concert series. As a co-host with 88.9 Radio Milwaukee, Wisconsin Music Ventures was excited to participate in their first online festival with a fantastic local business like Outpost. “I was so thrilled to work with Outpost on this collaboration,” said Allison Schweitzer, WMV Founder, Owner and Experience Generator. “Outpost Natural Foods Co-op is so much in-line with our own mission at WMV, being a community centered organization that puts an emphasis on supporting local. We were delighted to bring them a variety of some of Wisconsin’s finest musicians to help throw them a ‘virtual’ party.”
The four concerts were streamed live on Outpost’s Facebook page beginning Thursday, April 23rd with cellist and composer Janet Schiff of NINETEEN THIRTEEN. The Milwaukee based musician used electronic technology to enhance her instrument’s sound, making your ears believe there were 20 cellos instead of one!
Justin Jagler followed that Friday evening with original tunes on his guitar. The singer/songwriter paid homage to folk traditions with a bit of rock ‘n’ roll and soulfulness.
With a unique Wisconsin sound, Keith Pulvermacher entertained us on Saturday night with his guitar as well. He likes to note his music isn’t country, blues or folk, but is distinctly Midwestern inspired from his days growing up in Butler, WI.
Closing the celebration was a pre-recorded performance from 414 Quartet on the afternoon of Sunday, April 26th. Formed in 2017, the quartet includes Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra violinists Alex Ayers and Paul Hauer, violist Alejandro Duque, and cellist Peter Thomas. The 4 musicians each played in separate rooms to honor social distancing at this time which only added to the tone of the pieces.
Most performers were gifted with Outpost’s famous Mexican Chocolate cake and played Happy Birthday to show their appreciation and support. To learn more about the event and featured musicians visit Outpost Events.
